“I NEVER QUARREL WITH INCONSISTENCY, FOLKS MUST CHANGE THEIR MINDS.”
-Mary Shelley, aged seventeen.
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
Blue Box Theatre Company was proud to present a brand new original adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, written by award-winning playwright Chella Anderson. Using the original novel, Chella adapted the words of Mary Shelley, attempting to preserve much of the original beautiful language - while adding a LGBTQIA+ lens to the classic story.
Our Victor Frankenstein is a queer person who seeks to create an “ideal” being while struggling with his own identity. Hyperfixating on the comfort of those around him, he begins to lose himself in this futile endeavor. Meanwhile, his creation, a bright-eyed being who is hungry for connection and belonging, is faced with a world that does not understand them. Both beings wrestle with their own conceptions of self, what is owed to them, and the space they are allowed to occupy in the world.
What is left if Victor continues to flatten himself for the digestibility of others instead of believing the soft voice of his inner self?
Can the Creature finally find the acceptance and community they so feverously desire?
Or will they both be consumed by the burden of fear, expectation, and external judgement?
This new adaptation explores self creation, the societal costs of living authentically, and the personal costs of living inauthentically.

Naveed Moeed, Chatham Life & Style
“The production thrives on its willingness to let multiple threads of suffering breathe: queerphobia, fear of the "other," and the hubris of technological man all converge. This convergence is far from heavy-handed; it is wrought through Anderson's well-crafted language that honors Shelley's period while amplifying contemporary resonance.”
